Jones Fracture
A Jones fracture is an injury to the 5th metatarsal bone which is the bone that connects your little toe to the rest of your foot.
This fracture is often cause by overuse and repetitive stress in this area.
Symptoms will include pain on the outside of the foot and is often accompanied with swelling and difficulty walking.
Treatment
Patients are usually casted for several weeks but because of the location of the break and the lack of blood flow in this area, healing may be difficult and surgery may have to happen for the bone to fully heal.
In some patients, for example competitive athletes will choose surgery immediately to speed up their recovery. Surgery will consist of securing the bone with a screw.
Either way, physical therapy will begin shortly after the cast is removed to regain strength and range of motion.
